Obituary for Johanna D. Herweyer

Mrs. Johanna Herweyer, age 93, of Sioux Center, passed away on Wednesday, December 5, 2018, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

There will be a funeral service on Monday, December 10, at 10:30am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. The Rev. Duane Tinklenberg and the Rev. Wick Hubers will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation with the family will be on Monday, from 9:30am until the service, at the funeral home.

Johanna Dorothy was born on December 31, 1924, in Orange City, the daughter of Gerrit and Winnie (Kleinwolterink) Rens. She was raised in Sioux Center, where she attended school.

On February 7, 1945, she married Frederick Herweyer in Sioux Center. They moved to Wisconsin while “Fritz” was enlisted in the United States Army, and finally settled in northwest Iowa. They spent about half of their married life in Orange City and half in Sioux Center. “Fritz” passed away on July 7, 1987. She moved to the Pleasant Acres Care Center in August of 2016, and through their care, found her second family.

“Joey” was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City and more recently, the Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center.

She enjoyed selling Avon products, collecting dolls, having coffee with friends, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her two children and their spouses, Wanda and Robert Wichers, of Orange City; and James and Deb Herweyer, of North Wood; six grandchildren and their spouses, Kim Krull, and her friend, Kirk Te Grotenhuis; Lisa and Dan Majors; Robyn and Chris Parks; Jody and Jason Albers; Chad and Jennifer Herweyer; and Shane Herweyer; 14 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Henrietta Daale.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister and her husband, Hermina and Tony Heynen; and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Memorials may be directed to the Activities Department of the Pleasant Acres Care Center.
