Obituary for Patricia J. Huffman

Mrs. Patricia Huffman, age 90, of Orange City, was welcomed to her heavenly home on Wednesday, February 26, 2020, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, March 14, at 2:30pm, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Orange City. The Rev. David Daumer will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Patricia Joyce (Brown) Huffman was born June 16, 1929, the only child of Jack Gilbert and Melva May (Gibson) Brown of Toledo, Ohio.
As a child, she lived in many different places throughout the Toledo area. While they did not have much money during the depression, she was able to entertain herself by taking advantage of her city bus pass and any free event available. Saturday mornings were spent at the Toledo Art Museum children’s classes. She was also involved in swimming classes and Friendship clubs at the YWCA, clarinet lessons and band practice at the local music store, and any type of free concert or play. Musicals became her lifelong entertainment.

Pat was an avid reader and was known for tall pile of library books next to her chair. She also showed talent for writing. She graduated from DeVilbus High School in 1948. After high school she attended the University of Toledo for one year. She met a trumpeter, Edson Huffman, in marching band, and they chose to march together for the next 59 years. After raising four boys, she returned to college for no reason other than her love of learning. She graduated from Delta College with a degree in English.

Pat and Ed were married April 8, 1949, in Toledo. Following Ed’s job with Michigan Bell and Bell Systems Comptrollers, they lived in Toledo; Southfield, Michigan; and Denver, Colorado. She worked as a switchboard operator and a salesperson. They retired to a remote mountain cabin in Deer Mountain, Colorado.

After a bout of Guillain-Barre Syndrome, she spent nine months in a rehabilitation center learning to walk again and needed to move to Canon City, Colorado. Her strength, determination, faith, and humor will be remembered during this difficult time in her life. Her physical disabilities were only an inconvenience, not a barrier to her ability to enjoy life. She was still able to do crafts, read, travel, and be involved with her family. She moved to Orange City in 2008, to be closer to grandchildren. Ed passed away August 4, 2008 in Orange City.

Pat was proud of her many accomplishments and activities. In college she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. Pat and Ed were charter members of Saint Timothy Lutheran Church in Southfield, Michigan. They were members of Faith Lutheran Church in Orange City. They were also charter members of the Deer Mountain Fire Protection District, where she was the first training officer. She organized the vacation bible school programs at church and sang in the choir. Her poetry and Star Trek fan fiction were published in magazines.

Pat especially enjoyed the Colorado mountains, wildflowers, red-winged blackbirds, crossword puzzles, classical music, watching musicals, and reading. Her most recent favorite activity was granddaughter hugs.

Pat will be missed by four sons and their spouses, Bill and Karyn, Steve and Linda, Eric and Ruth, and Tim and Soni; along with eleven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Memorials may be directed to the Prairie Ridge Care Center.
