Obituary for Minnie Alma Bogaard

Mrs. Minnie Alma Bogaard, age 94, of Orange City, passed away on Tuesday, November 19, 2019, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, December 7, at 11:00am, at the Trinity Reformed Church in Orange City. Mr. Dan Bogaard and Mrs. Debra De Haan will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Minnie Alma was born on December 9, 1924, in rural Orange City, the daughter of John and Johanna (Mouw) Kleinhesselink. She was raised on the family farm east of Orange City and graduated from the Newkirk High School.

On December 4, 1945, she was united it marriage to Milton D. Bogaard in Orange City. They farmed the Century family farm for forty years, until 1989, when they retired to Orange City. On September 11, 2015, they moved to the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake. After seventy years of marriage, Milt passed away on December 10, 2015, in Storm Lake.

Alma was a faithful member of the Trinity Reformed Church, and was active as Sunday School superintendent, teacher, and circle chairman. She sang solos, as well as duets with her husband, trios, quartets, and in the church choir.

In 1979, she received the Sioux County Homemaker of the Year Award for her years of volunteering and involvement in the following: Sioux County Extension Council, 4-H leader, chairman of the Sioux County Fair Education Presentations, Sioux County Fair Queen Committee, Sioux County and Orange City Arts Councils, chairman of the Orange City Hospital Auxiliary Board and Bazaar, treasury of the Northwestern College Auxiliary Board, Tulip Festival Queen’s Committee and her participation in the Tulip Festival musicals and activities.

In retirement, Alma enjoyed being involved with her family’s activities. You would find her lifting weights at Northwestern College. From 1990 to 2009, she served the Orange City community by being their City Hostess.
Alma will always be cherished and loved by her family, which include her children, Dan (Betty) Bogaard, of Sun Lakes, Arizona; and Debra (Dr. Fred) DeHaan, of Storm Lake; a daughter-in-law, Carol Bogaard-Koele, of Orange City; seven grandchildren, Steven (Rebecca) Bogaard, of Hospers; Lt. Col. Dr. Mike (Dr. Patricia) Bogaard, of Peoria, Arizona; Rachel (Bryan) Van Kley, of Newton; CMD (sel) Nick (Claire) Bogaard, of Bahrain/Virginia Beach, Virginia; John (Michele) Bogaard, of Des Moines; Tyler (Stacie) DeHaan, of Van Meter; and Jeffrey (Lindsay) DeHaan, of Storm Lake; sixteen great-grandchildren, Zemirah, Creed, Jacinth, and Adia Bogaard; Brendan, Aleah and Tayla Bogaard; Kallie, Victoria and Trevor Van Kley; Maeve Bogaard; Isabelle and Parker De Haan; Avery, Reagan and Cooper De Haan; a sister-in-law, Ruth Van Voorhis, of Iowa City; and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, David Bogaard; a sister, Burdean (Charles) Huitink; two brothers, Henry (Hattie) Kleinhesselink and Joe (Dorella) Kleinhesselink; and in-laws, Cliff (Ethel) Bogaard, Kathy (George) Frerichs, and Dr. Lee Van Voorhis.

Memorials may be directed to Hope Harbor at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, or the Methodist Manor Retirement Community, both in Storm Lake.
