Obituary for Melvin L. Kruizenga

Mr. Melvin Kruizenga, age 88, of Hospers, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2020, at the Orange City Area Health System.

There will be a funeral service on Saturday, February 22, at 10:00am, at the Trinity Reformed Church Hospers Campus. Pastor Kurt Bush and the Rev. Milton Sikkema will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the St. Anthony’s Catholic Cemetery in Hospers. Visitation with the family will be on Friday, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the CHURCH.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers.

Melvin “Mel” LeRoy was born on June 6, 1931, in Sioux Center, the son of John and Winnie (Bonnema) Kruizenga. He was raised in Sioux Center, where he attended school until his family moved to California where he graduated from high school. He then drove a ready-mix cement truck and pulled a set of double trailers, hauling sand and gravel.

He was united in marriage to Mary Jo Jones in February of 1951. Later that marriage ended.
In 1970, he returned to Iowa, where he and his brother, Ben, owned a used car business. Later, he was a foreman at OCCO Feeds in Sheldon and worked as a custodian for the MOC-Floyd Valley School District.

On July 31, 1987, he was united in marriage to Mary (Huygens) Anderson in Hospers, where they made their home. Following retirement in 1993, he worked part time at Walmart in Sioux Center.

Mr. Kruizenga was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church, formerly the First Reformed Church, in Hospers. He was very proud of his faith in Jesus Christ and enjoyed sharing it with others whenever he had the opportunity.

Survivors include his wife of more than 32 years; a daughter, Pam Mello, of Artesia, California; a son and his wife, Mark and Julie Kruizenga, of Downey, California; a step-son and his wife, Larry and Rhonda Anderson, of Hospers; six grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; twelve step-great-grandchildren, with another on the way; and two step-great-great-grandchildren, with another on the way.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Penney Rodesta; a son-in-law, Michael Mello; six brothers, an infant, Pete, Paul, John, Ben, and Glenn Kruizenga; and eight sisters, an infant, Lorraine Kruizenga, Dena Van Ravenswaay, Kate Kosters, Alice Dolieslager, Esther Schoeneveld, Mary Wiarda, and Winnie Coulander.

Memorials may be directed to the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice and Samaritan’s Purse.
