Mary Louise was born on December 9, 1928, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to James and Elizabeth (Haaksma) Vander Moere. She was raised in Grand Rapids where she attended school and spent her summers on the shores of Michigan lakes. She received her Register’s Nursing Degree from Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids.

On September 14, 1951, she was united in marriage to Wilbur Wiersma in Grand Rapids. Following Wilbur’s return from deployment in Korea, the couple lived at the Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana before moving to LeMars. In 1963, they settled on a farm near Orange City where Mary kept busy raising their five children and helping her husband with the farm animals. In later years, she worked as a nurse at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City, and as a part-time in-home health care nurse.

In 1999, Wilbur and Mary moved into a home in Orange City and spent their winters in Texas. They loved to travel and had a heart for mission work, traveling to Nigeria, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic. Wilbur passed away on December 21, 2009, in Orange City, after more than 58 years of marriage. In June of 2015, Mary became a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City, and in November of 2017, she moved to the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

Mary was an active member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church. She enjoyed all kinds of crafts and did them well, including knitting, sewing, embroidery, quilting, counted cross stitch, painting, and other hand work. She also had a passion for reading and growing African Violets.

She is survived by her five children and twelve grandchildren, Ruth, and her husband, Terry Huizingh, of Denver, Colorado, and their three children, Jonathan (Megan) Huizingh, Ryan (Sarah) Huizingh, and Devin (Maggie) Huizingh; Paul Wiersma, and his wife, Joyce, of Summerland, British Columbia, and their three children, Sharon (Kurt) Vos, Rachel (Mark) Peters, and Daniel (Amanda) Wiersma; Joyce Wiersma, of Denver, Colorado; Bruce Wiersma, and his wife, Mary, of Orange City, and their two children, Angela (Dan) Aesoph, and Travis Wiersma; and Dean Wiersma, and his wife, Judy, of Fort Collins, Colorado, and their four children, Andy (Jenny) Wiersma, Steve (Crystal) Wiersma, Matt Wiersma, and Joel Wiersma; 22 great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Jim and Bea Vander Moere, of Grand Rapids; a brother-in-law, Glenn Wiersma, of Odessa, Texas; a sister-in-law, Emilie Wiersma, of Denver; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by Paul and Joyce’s daughter, Carla Wiersma, on December 7, 2010; a sister, Martha Stuits; a sister-in-law, Joyce Wiersma; and two brothers-in-law, Ralph Wiersma, and Lee Wiersma.
