Obituary for Mary E. Apon

Mrs. Mary Apon, age 63, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, June 22, 2019, at the Orange City Area Health System.

There will be a funeral service on Thursday, June 27, at 11:30am, at the First Reformed Church Chapel in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Haverdink will officiate. Visitation with the family will be on Thursday, from 10:30am to 11:30am, at the CHURCH.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Mary Elizabeth was born on February 24, 1956, in Bronx, New York, the daughter of George and Margaret (Dillon) Lux, Sr. She was raised in Somers, New York, where she graduated from the Somers High School and attended BOCES (Board of Cooperative Educational Services), earning her Secretarial Certificate.

On May 18, 1996, she married John Adam Apon in Danbury, Connecticut, where they made their home. In August of 2007, they moved to Orange City. John passed away on December 19, 2018, in Sioux City.

Mary worked at several nursing homes, including Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City, as a dietary manager. She was also a volunteer at Bibles for Missions in Orange City, and enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, and spending time at the beach and with her family.

Survivors include her two daughters, Jessica, and her husband, Jason Bruinsma, and April Sunday, all of Orange City; five grandchildren, Tyler, Xavion, and Kaitlyn Bruinsma; and Anthony and Mia Sunday; five siblings, Eileen, and her husband, Nikolas Nelson, of Clearwater, Florida; Carol Lux, and her husband, Michael Conley, of Vashon, Washington; George Lux, of Somers; Maureen Lux, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and Robert Lux, and his wife, Sheila, of Mahopac, New York; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Shawn Sunday, and a granddaughter, Hayley Marie Sunday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
