Obituary for Marlo J. Top

Mr. Marlo Top, age 68, of Orange City, passed away on Thursday, August 22, 2019, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

There will be a prayer service on Saturday, August 24, at 10:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. The Rev. John Klompien and the Rev. Aldon Kuiper will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City.

Marlo James was born on June 23, 1951, in Southgate, California, the son of Dick and Sarah Grace (Rozeboom) Top. He was raised in northwest Iowa after his family moved there in 1956. In 1971, he was drafted into the United States Army. He served at Fort Hood, Texas, as a military police guard during the Vietnam era.

Following his return, he married Debra Huisman, and together they had two children.

In the late 70’s, he moved to Denver, Colorado. He returned to Iowa in the early 80’s. He worked as a printer for the Diamond Vogel Paint Company, drove truck, and had other odd jobs until a major motor vehicle accident forced him to stop working.

“Mert” was a member of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. He enjoyed working on cars and even built one.

Survivors include his daughter, Sheila, of Denver; his son, Benjamin, of Sioux Center; a grandson; four brothers and a sister, Elwin Top, and his wife, Barbara, of Orange City; Terry Top, of Luton; Gladys, and her husband, Jack Hutson, of Waxhaw, North Carolina; Richard Top, of Holt, Florida; and Martin Top, and his wife, Paula, of Alton; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Delbert Top.

Memorials may be directed to the Calvary Christian Reformed Church or the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice.
