Obituary for Loren Bouma

Mr. Loren Bouma, age 71, of Hull, passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2019, at the Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

There will be a funeral service on Thursday, September 19, at 10:00am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Carl Klompien will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the church.

Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Loren Bruce was born on October 28, 1947, in Hull, the son of Otto B. and Harriet Marie (Koele) Bouma. He was raised in Hull, where he graduated from Hull Christian School and from Western Christian High School. He then attended Dordt University and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa. Following his graduation from Iowa, Loren spent two years in the army serving in Germany and Vietnam.

On June 16, 1972, he was united in marriage to Gaylene Ruth Visser in Sioux Center. The couple first made their home in Denver, Colorado, where Loren was a computer programmer. They moved to Hull in 1974, where Loren farmed and operated Hull Feed and Produce. He later served on the Sioux County Board of Supervisors for sixteen years, was the business manager for Western Christian High School for twenty years and drove truck for ECHO in Sioux Center during his retirement years.

Mr. Bouma was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull, where he served as a Deacon and an Elder. He was very active in the community having served as a councilman for the city of Hull, as well as on the boards of Western Christian, Hull Christian School, and the Hull Community Betterment Corp. He had also been a Cadet Counselor, was a member of the Hull Kiwanis Club, and volunteered to work at the voting poles. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, reading, and following sports, particularly the Iowa Hawkeyes, Atlanta Braves, Dordt University, and Western Christian. He was a strong supporter of Christian education and looked forward to attending his grandchildren’s school activities.

Survivors include his wife of more than 47 years; five children, Lynnae Bouma, of Minnetonka, Minnesota; Stephanie, and her husband, Sean Baccam, of Hull; Lisa, and her husband, Todd Visser, of Rock Valley; Kara, and her husband, Andrew Feikema, of Minnetonka; and Brian Bouma, and his wife, Shannon, of Mayer, Minnesota; fourteen grandchildren, Christopher, Logan, and Braden Baccam; Madison, Teagen, Cambrie, and Owen Visser; Matthias, Wilhelmina, and Margaret Feikema; and Jacob, Autumn, Leighton, and Hudson Bouma; his wife’s siblings and their spouses, Dennis and Karen Visser, of Iowa City; Doug and Bernita Vander Schaaf, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Bob and Phylis Blankespoor, of Harrisburg, South Dakota; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marla Bouma; and Gaylene’s parents, Gerrit and Katherine Visser.
