Obituary for Lelon V. Goeringer

Mr. Lelon Goeringer, age 68, of Hull, passed away on Tuesday, December 4, 2018, at the Rock Rapids Health Centre.

There will be a funeral service on Friday, December 7, at 11:00am, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in rural Hull. The Rev. Aaron Deutsch will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation with the family will be on Thursday, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Lelon Verdean was born on August 19, 1950, in Le Mars, the son of Ewald and Esther (Reyelts) Goeringer. He was raised in Hull, where he graduated from the public high school in 1969.

He then attended the Humboldt Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota, studying airline personnel training. Upon returning to Hull, he attended the Northwest Iowa Community College in Sheldon. He took a welding course there and worked as a metal worker for a short time.

Mr. Goeringer then served five years as a custodian at the Boyden-Hull Community School, where he took great pride in caring for the grounds. From 1979 to 1987 he worked for the City of Hull, reading meters, maintaining parks, and cleaning the community center. He then returned to the school for another six years.

In 2003, he retired due to deteriorating health. He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2007. In 2017, he moved to the Health Center.

Lelon was baptized at the Zion Lutheran Church in Hull, and upon its closing, transferred with his family to the St. Paul Lutheran Church, where, he enjoyed worshipping with the congregation over television.

He will be remembered as a gentle man, with a kind smile and quiet demeanor. He was a hard worker, known for his handiwork, as well as his shingling and painting skills.

Lelon was a seasoned traveler, touring much of the United States and making several visits to Europe. He was a geography expert and an avid student of maps and cartography.

Grateful to have shared his life are his brother-in-law, Cornelius Wabeke, of Newell; a nephew and his wife, Cordell and Marcia Wabeke, of Ankeny; a niece and her husband, Dr. Wendy and Dr. Michael Dawson, of Springfield, Missouri; five great-nephews and great-nieces, Abby and Cameron Wabeke; and Emma, Jack, and Christian Dawson; two aunts, Viola Goeringer, of Bellevue, Washington; and Viola Ackerman, of Bismark, North Dakota; and many other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Delores Wabeke; grandparents, the Rev. Edward and Emma Goeringer and August and Frieda Reyelts; and many uncles and aunts, Art and Anna Mae Goeringer, Walt and Betty Goeringer, Otto Goeringer, Irma and William Hollander, Ernest and Lillian Goeringer, Amanda Goeringer, Elsie Goeringer, Maida and Herman Schumacher, Hilda and Fred Hollander, Ella and Albert Heinle, Irene Goeringer, Edna Goeringer, Theophile Ackerman, W. C. “Bill” and Hendrika and Marian Reyelts, and Alfred and Mildred Winter.
