Obituary for Hilmore Kroese

Mr. Hilmore Kroese, age 85, of Hull, passed away on Friday, December 7, 2018, at Sioux Center Health.

There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, December 11, at 1:30pm, at the First Reformed Church in Hull, The Rev. Kevin Yurk will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull.

Visitation with the family will be on Monday, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the church. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Hilmore was born on September 10, 1933, in rural Hull, the son of Ivan and Alberta (Brummel) Kroese. He was raised on farms in the Hull-Middleburg area. He attended a country school, Hull Christian School, and Western Christian High School in Hull. He then served in the United States Army as part of the military police.

On September 10, 1953, he married LaVonne Van Den Oever in Hull. They made their home in Hull, where he was a carpenter. In 1979, he started Kroese Construction in partnership with his son, David. In semi-retirement, he was custodian at Aspen Heights Assisted Living in Hull.

Mr. Kroese was a member of the First Reformed Church, where he served as an elder, a deacon, and a catechism teacher. He also belonged to the Wegman-Koele American Legion Post in Hull.

His faith was important to him, and he followed politics, concerned about the deteriorating values in our country.

He enjoyed woodcarving, woodworking, and local sporting events. When his health permitted, he liked helping his children and grandchildren with their projects. He looked forward to spending time with his great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of more than 65 years; two sons and their wives, David and Kay (Wynia) Kroese, of Hull; and Darrel and Karla (Lourens) Kroese, of Orange City; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Eric and Bobbie Kroese, Scott Kroese, Alison Kroese, Justin and Allison Kroese, Jessica and Brandon Bonnema, Kendra Kroese, and Kelsey and Taylor Deegan; eight great-grandchildren, Sophia, Emma, Olivia, Noah, and Hannah Kroese, Jacob and Klayton Kroese, and Bentley Bonnema; and brothers and sisters and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gerald and Harriet Kroese, Jo Ludema, Agnes Kroese, Belle and Ken Draayer, Joanne Boeve, and Evelyn Rens.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant granddaughter, Jenna Kroese; and brothers and sisters and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Hendrene Kroese, Al and Eleanor Kroese, Ken Ludema, Irvin Kroese, John and Claretta Mulder, Gertrude and Herman Vander Vliet, Jean and Russ Vander Zwaag, Cynthia and Ralph Oostra, Henrietta and George Wassenaar, Catherine and John Elmer De Wit, Wilmina and Anthony Smit, Donald Boeve, and Marv Rens.

Memorials may be directed to the First Reformed Church Building Fund, the Hull Christian School or the Orange City Christian School.
