Obituary for Harlan K. Hulst

Mr. Harlan K. Hulst, age 67, of Bonita, California, formerly of Hull, passed away on January 5, 2019, in Mexico. Services were held at Glen Abby Chapel in Bonita, on February 3, 2019, and officiated by The Rev. Fr. Dermot Rodgers.

There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, April 13, from 2:00pm to 5:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull. Friends and family are invited to attend for a time of sharing.

Harlan Keith was born on November 9, 1951, in Sioux Center, the son of John Jr. and Agnes (Roozing) Hulst. He moved to California with his parents at the age of three, where he attended the Thomas Jefferson Elementary in Bellflower until the sixth grade. The family then moved to Hull, where he finished his education at the Boyden-Hull High School in 1970.

He then joined the United States Navy in December of 1970. After completing Basic Training in San Diego, California, he went on to proudly serve his country as an Aviation Boatswain Mate (aircraft handling) First Class on the USS New Orleans (LPN-11), the USS Denver (LPD-9), the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63), and would eventually retire on the USS Midway (CV-41). On October 1, 1993, Harlan transferred to Fleet Reserve, and spent the years after his retirement, until his death, with the Merchant Marines. He became ill while serving on the USM Green Bay, off the coast of Mexico.

Mr. Hulst met his wife, Norma Pierre Alberto, while stationed in the Philippines. They were married on January 20, 1978, in Olongopo City in the Philippines. They had two sons, Michael and Matthew.

Harlan loved traveling the world and being at sea. He enjoyed reading, telling jokes, and observing people. Norma’s family appreciated the fact that he totally immersed himself in the Tagalog dialect and family customs and traditions of their area. He won many Karaoke contests, singing in Tagalog. With his love for reading, he became a master of trivia. He will always be remembered as a kind and loving husband, father, and big brother to his whole family.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Norma (Alberto) Hulst, and two sons, Michael and Matthew Hulst, all of San Diego; his mother, Agnes Hulst, of Sheldon; a sister and her husband, Shannon and Dennis Baack, of Sheldon; six sisters-in-law and their husbands, Cely and Jessie Nava, of Los Angelos, California; Maria and Edwin Baldoria, of Bromerton, Washington; Thelma and Ariel Torrente, of Phoenix, Arizona; Angelina Amigo, of Olongopo City, Philippines; Evelyn and Keith Roland, of Virginia; and Zeny and LaVerne Sunday, of San Diego; a brother-in-law, Freddie Alberto, of South Korea; and twenty nephews and ten nieces.

In addition to his father, John Hulst, Jr., he was preceded in death by a sister, Sharla Wohlert; his parents-in-law, Fely and Pol Alberto; and two brothers-in-law, Dominador Alberto and Danilo Amigo.
