Obituary for Gordon H. Brink

Mr. Gordon Brink, age 93, of Cherokee, formerly of Orange City, passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2019, at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, September 14, at 3:30pm, at the First Reformed Church Chapel. The Rev. Mark Haverdink will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Sherman Township Cemetery near Maurice. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday, at 2:15pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation with the family will be on Friday, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the funeral home.

Gordon Henry, the son of Gerrit William and Anna (DeRoos) Brink, was born on October 24, 1925. He was raised on his family’s farm, where he was born, near Orange City, and graduated from the Maurice High School. In April of 1945, he enlisted in the United States Army, and served in Japan during World War II.

On February 13, 1951, he married Eleanor Beatrice Colenbrander in Sioux Center. They made their home on the Brink family farm until moving into Orange City in 1992. Eleanor passed away on April 8, 2013, in Remsen, after more than 62 years of marriage. Later that same year, Gordon moved to the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. In 2015, he moved to The Gardens Assisted Living in Cherokee.

Mr. Brink was a member of the First Reformed Church in Orange City and had been a member of the Rural Water system board of directors.

Gordon enjoyed woodworking, carpentry, electrical work, mechanical work, watching sports, and spending time at the Senior Center, where he had served as treasurer.

Survivors include his three children and their spouses; Janice and Dr. Mark Carlson, of Cherokee; Lynnette and Jeff Witt, of Ames; and Leon and Heather Brink, of Milton, Massachusetts; five grandchildren, Dr. Brittnia Lewis, and her husband, Nate; Michael Carlson, and his wife, Jamie; Kate Johnson, and her husband, Alex; Quinlan Brink; and Will Brink; five great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law Adeline Lammers, of Hull; and a brother-in-law, Henk Aarsen, of Orange City.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his four siblings, Myron Brink, Warren Brink, George Genant; and Frances Brink Bloemendaal; a sister-in-law, Sylvia Aarsen; and a brother-in-law, Dick Lammers.
