Obituary for David H. Kleis

Mr. David Kleis, age 75, of St. Petersburg, Florida, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 25, 2020, at the Bayside Care Center in St. Petersburg, of complications from kidney disease.

There will be a private family interment at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City, Iowa. The Rev. Mark Haverdink will officiate. The Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City is in charge of arrangements.

David Harold was born on August 12, 1944, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the son of Harold and Dora (Vander Kolk) Kleis. He was a graduate of Northwestern College in Orange City, where he played competitive tennis and was the captain of both the football and basketball teams. He obtained his master’s degree from Mankato State University in Mankato, Minnesota. He then worked as a math teacher in Sioux Center, Iowa and Minneapolis, Minnesota. He returned to Iowa where he lived in Hospers, Marcus, and Des Moines while working in the banking and insurance business. In 1999, he relocated to St. Petersburg.

He loved the outdoors and being with people. He spent many summers on the north shore of Big Spirit Lake in Iowa and enjoyed countless memorable adventures on the water. With his uplifting laugh, boundless energy, quick wit, and bright smile, he made acquaintances and friends easily.

David will be greatly missed by his two sons and their wives, Karlton and Allison Kleis, of Grimes, Iowa, and Andrew and Kristin Kleis, of West Des Moines, Iowa; five grandchildren, Emerson, Griffin and Greer Kleis, and Madison and Graham Kleis; a sister, Judy De Does, of Little Elm, Texas; and a sister-in-law, Sharon Kleis, of Orange City.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Kleis.
