Obituary for Arlin Bylsma

Mr. Arlin Bylsma, age 72, of Orange City, passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2020, at the Sanford Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

There will be a funeral service on Saturday, March 14, at 10:00am, at the First Reformed Church in Maurice. The Rev. Wick Hubers will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Sherman Township Cemetery near Maurice. Visitation with the family will be on Friday, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm, at the CHURCH. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Arlin Ivan was born on May 17, 1947, in Orange City, the son of Peter and Jeannett (De Jong) Bylsma. He was raised in Orange City and graduated from the Western Christian High School in Hull. He then attended Western Iowa Technical College in Sioux City where he was trained as a welder. He worked at Gus Pech in Le Mars until enlisting in the United States Army in 1966. After serving for two years, he began working for Bill Tolman at Tolman Welding in Orange City, where he remained for 25 years. During that time, he met his future wife, Lorna, through friends while she was attending Dordt College in 1970.

On August 12, 1971, he was united in marriage to Lorna Kaye (Brouwer) Bylsma in Orange City. They were members of the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City where he was a Cadet Counselor for many years. They later became members of the First Reformed Church in Maurice.

Following Mr. Tolman’s retirement in 1993, Arlin began working at Den Hartog Industries in Hospers, where he remained for more than 25 years, retiring in July of 2019. He was a member of the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post in Orange City, served on the board of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City, and participated in Cursillio and the Grandparent Program through the church in Maurice. In earlier years he attended TEC with his daughter, Leah. He enjoyed traveling for pleasure and to see and spend time with his family. His family will remember him as a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife of more than 48 years; six children, Cathy Klemme, of Alcester, South Dakota, and her friend, Brian Hand, of Cherokee; Pam, and her husband, Mike Klink, of Pocahontas; Anthony Bylsma, of Orange City; James Bylsma, and Mary McCulloch, of Dakota City, Nebraska; Kayla, and her husband, Rick Hoekstra, of Maurice; and Leah, and her husband, Scott Van Voorst, of Sergeant Bluff; eleven grandchildren, Austin Heuertz, and his wife, Brenda; Dusty Heuertz, and her fiancé, Steven Hartman; Danika Heuertz; Christopher Klemme; Keagan Klemme; Tatyanna Van Voorst; Clay Hoekstra; Jedryk Van Voorst; Charlee Bylsma; Liam Van Voorst; and Skye Hoekstra; two honorary grandchildren, Nicki and Nick Hand; two great-grandchildren, Kyllian and Emma Heuertz; two honorary great-grandchildren, Kiera and Hunter Hartman; his siblings, Gloria, and her husband, Dennis Alberta, of Caledonia, Michigan; Merlin Bylsma, and his wife, Holly, and Marilyn Alcantar, all of Orange City; Eydie, and her husband, Donald Owens, of Sioux Center; and Yvette, and her husband, Randy Feekes, of Archer; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and parents-in-law, Louis and Esther (De Wilde) Brouwer, he was preceded in death by an infant grandson and a brother-in-law, Gary De Cramer.

Memorials may be directed to the Pioneer Memorial Home and the Pressman-Kosters American Legion.
