Obituary for Arlene N. Vander Pol

Mrs. Arlene Vander Pol, age 89, of Orange City, passed away on Friday, September 6, 2019, at her residence.

There will be a memorial service on Monday, September 9, at 10:30am, at the Newkirk Reformed Church in rural Hospers. The Rev. Harlan De Jong and the Rev. Mark Haverdink will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Newkirk Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service on Monday, at 9:30am, at the CHURCH.

Visitation with the family will be on Sunday, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Arlene Nellie was born on August 11, 1930, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. At the age of three, she was adopted by Jacob and Fannie (Harmelink) Hofmeyer and was later raised by Garret and Gertrude (Hofmeyer) Vander Schaaf on their farm north of Newkirk. She graduated from the Newkirk Consolidated School.

On June 30, 1948, she was united in marriage to Arthur Jean Vander Pol in Newkirk. They made their home, and farmed, on the Vander Pol Family Century Farm north of Newkirk. In 1988, they moved to a home in Newkirk, and in 2003, they moved to Orange City. Arthur passed away on August 15, 2012, in Remsen, after more than 64 years of marriage. On August 29, 2015, Arlene moved to the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City.

Mrs. Vander Pol was a lifelong member of the Newkirk Reformed Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Missions Fellowship. In earlier years, she and Arthur spent their winter months doing volunteer mission work. She and one of her friends also started the Floyd Farm Bureau Group.

Arlene enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, sewing, and crocheting. She also liked to watch the local school’s girls’ volleyball, softball, and basketball games.

Survivors include her three children and their spouses, Lyle and Karen Vander Pol, of Newkirk; Harold “Harry” and Lora Vander Pol, of Orange City; and Roberta and Mark Brightman, of Earlham; a son-in-law, Lance Klein, of Frisco, Texas; eleven grandchildren, Kyle Vander Pol, and his wife, Sarah; Kelly, and her husband, Jonas Kaminskas; Kristin, and her husband, Josh Christenson; Matthew Vander Pol, and his wife, Terri; Brooke, and her husband, Adam Brinkmeier; Brittney, and her husband, Dave Meyer; Travis Klein, and his wife, Robin; Taylor Klein; Arianna, and her husband, Bryton Voss; Marina Brightman; and Malachi Brightman; seventeen great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Carol Vander Pol, of Orange City, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her adoptive parents and foster parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Jewel Klein; a foster sister, Joyce, and her husbands, Edward Van Zanten and Lester Haspels; a brother-in-law, Harvey Vander Pol; a sister-in-law and her husband, Gertrude and Frank De Graaf; her grandparents, John and Nellie Visser and Herman and Dena Hofmeyer; and her parents-in-law, Harry and Johanna (Oolbekkink) Vander Pol.

Memorials may be directed to the Newkirk Reformed Church.
