Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Arie Kryn was born on August 14, 1918, in Volga, South Dakota, to Peter and Johanna (Lengkeek) Mans. He grew up on a farm near Volga with eleven siblings and attended school at the Bangar District #4 Country School. As a young man, Arie came to Iowa looking for farm work and eventually worked for Dick Verdoorn, and fell in love with the farmer’s daughter, Alice.

Arie and Alice were married on June 10, 1941, at the Verdoorn’s farm near Middleburg. They were blessed with six daughters. They lived and farmed near Middleburg the first year of their marriage. Then they moved to South Dakota and farmed there for two years before moving back to Iowa where they farmed just north of Orange City. In 1960, Arie and Alice bought a farm near Maurice where Arie raised cattle, hogs, and dairy cows, as well as farming the land. In 1974, Arie and Alice moved to Orange City, but he continued working on the farm and doing custom work for several years.

Arie had an interest in carpentry and woodworking. As a young man, he helped build the Christian Reformed Church in Volga, and after retirement he built several houses. After he retired, he also made furniture, clocks, quilt racks, and many other items. His clocks and other handiwork are displayed in the homes of all his children and grandchildren. Arie also enjoyed playing pool and cards at the Senior Center, and his favorite past time, fishing. He had a great memory for dates and details of events and loved to entertain people with stories of farming and fishing tales.

Arie was a great caretaker for Alice prior to her passing in 2006. He continued to live in his home until age 97, when he went to live at Landsmeer Ridge and later moved to the Prairie Ridge Care Center, both in Orange City, where the staff and residents became his second family.

Arie was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church, where he participated in the men’s society, prayer breakfast, and Bible study.

Arie is survived and will be greatly missed by his six daughters; Arlene Sahmel, of Fairport, New York; Ardith and Ronald J. De Jong, of Orange City; Alice Mae and John Jongma, of Orange City; Carolyn and Daryl Dekkers, of Fort Collins, Colorado; Wanda and Gary Coon, of Rochester, New York; and Meredith and David Zwirn, of Bridgeport, Nebraska; fifteen grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; several foster grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, June Gorter, of Overland Park, Kansas; Johanna Brink, of Grand Rapids, Michigan; a brother, Peter and Jo Mans, of Blaine, Washington; and a sister-in-law, Laura Mans, of Volga, South Dakota.

In addition to his parents, Arie was preceded in death by his loving wife, Alice; six infant grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a son-in-law, Will Sahmel; a granddaughter’s husband, David Mc Dowell; three sisters; and five brothers.

Memorial gifts may be directed to the Orange City Christian School or Unity Christian High School.
