WILHELMINA VAN SCHEPEN

Mrs. Minnie Van Schepen, age 98, of Hull, Iowa, passed away on Friday, September 11, 2009, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, September 15, at 10:00am, at the Hope Christian Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Todd Zuidema will officiate. There will be a graveside service on Tuesday, at 12:00noon, at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation will be after 6:00pm on Monday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Wilhelmina was born on June 25, 1911, at Pease, Minnesota, the daughter of John and Johanna (Hubers) Hubers. As a teenager, she and her family moved to Hull, where she graduated from the Western Christian Academy. There she was active in musical groups and played basketball.

She then took a year's teacher's training in Kearny, Nebraska, after which she taught school in Rock Valley and Hull and Leota, Minnesota.

On June 9, 1938, she married Fred Van Schepen in Hull. They made their home at Hull, where Minnie was a homemaker and also assisted her husband at Van's Implement, including serving as bookkeeper and parts manager. She also worked for many years as a library and study hall monitor at Western Christian High School in Hull. After several years of productive and enjoyable retirement, which included much travel, Fred and Minnie became residents of Pleasant Acres. Fred passed away on January 6, 1998, in Hull.

She was a charter member of the Hope Christian Reformed Church, where she participated in the women's activities. She enjoyed entertaining in her home, gardening, canning, and sewing; she was known as a good cook.

Mrs. Van Schepen was a faithful wife and mother, and she loved visiting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as friends from her church and community.

Survivors include four children and their spouses, Janice and Gil Blankespoor, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Marlys De Jong and Bruce and Val Van Schepen, all of Orange City; and Tim and Joy Van Schepen, of Arnold's Park; a daughter-in-law, Betty Van Schepen, of Hull; nineteen grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Creston “Tess” Van Schepen; a son-in-law, Bob De Jong; two brothers, Henry and Bert Hubers; and two sisters, Jennie Van Roekel and Dena Van Pykeren.
