VIOLA M. VAN SCHEPEN

Mrs. Viola Van Schepen, age 80, of Hull, passed away on Friday, October 2, 2009, at the Sioux Center Community Hospital.

There will be a memorial service on Tuesday, October 6, at 11:00am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Paul Hansen will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. There will be a prayer service on Tuesday, at 10:00am, at the church.

Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Monday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the CHURCH. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Viola Maxine was born on April 17, 1929, at Hull, the daughter of John William and Fanny (Van't Hul) Ten Haken. She was raised near Hull, where she graduated from the public high school.

On April 22, 1948, she married Melvin Abram Van Schepen at the First Reformed Church in Hull. They made their home in Hull, where she was a homemaker. She also served one year as the secretary at Western Christian High School in Hull.

“Vi” was an active member of the First Christian Reformed Church, where she participated in the Mission Guild and the Bereans and taught Sunday school and Friendship Bible classes. She also belonged to the Wegman-Koele Amercian Legion Post Auxiliary.

She enjoyed volunteering, helping raise funds for the Hull Swimming Pool and serving as a care advocate at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull for 25 years. She and her husband also delivered Meals on Wheels for several years.

Survivors include her husband of more than 61 years, “Charlie”; a son and his wife, Eldon and Lisa Van Schepen, and a daughter-in-law, Arlene Van Schepen, all of Hull; five grandchildren and their spouses, Sherri and Erik Oostenink, of Des Moines; Joel and Brenda Van Schepen, of Raymore, Missouri; Nicole and Brian Rozeboom, of Hull; Michael and Amanda Van Schepen, of Clarksville, Tennessee; and Nicholas and Katie Van Schepen, of Hull; seven great-grandchildren, Shannon and Kendra Oostenink; Tyler, Jordan, and Emily Van Schepen; and Sawyer and Addison Rozeboom; a brother and his wife, Vernon and Antoinette Ten Haken, of Boyden; and a sister and her husband, Darlene and Lloyd Woelber, of Hull.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Randall Van Schepen.
