Mr. Lloyd Grotenhuis, age 69, of rural Sheldon, passed away on Wednesday, December 23, 2009, at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.
There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, December 29, at 10:00am, at the Newkirk Reformed Church in rural Hospers. The Rev. Dennis Hietbrink will officiate. Interment will follow at the Newkirk Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Monday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Lloyd Dale was born on March 16, 1940, in Orange City, the son of Reuben and Marie Aletta (Ver Steeg) Grotenhuis. He was raised at Newkirk, where he graduated from high school.
On November 10, 1959, he married Rosa Jean Van Kley in Newkirk. They farmed the land where he was raised, north of Newkirk, in rural Sheldon.
Mr. Grotenhuis was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church, where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher and sang in the choir and for many funerals.
He enjoyed singing, especially in men's quartets, and particularly barbershop quartets in earlier years. He looked forward to family gatherings.
Survivors include his wife of just over fifty years; four children, Pamela, and her husband, Doug De Haan, of Alton; Evan Grotenhuis, and his wife, Sheryl, of Hospers; Kimberly Goeden, and her special friend, Dave Lovelady, of Steward, Nebraska; and James Grotenhuis, and his wife Dianna, of Houston, Texas; fourteen grandchildren, Rosalyn De Haan, Rachelle, and her husband, Michael Gewecke, Jonathan De Haan, Rebecca De Haan, David De Haan; Karissa Grotenhuis, Alicia Grotenhuis, Joshua Grotenhuis; Kendra Goeden, Joselyn Goeden, Shelby Goeden; Kimberly Zapata, Miranda Grotenhuis, and Lillian Grotenhuis; a great-granddaughter, Kylee Alexandria Zapata; and a brother and his wife, Marley and Ruth Grotenhuis, of Sibley.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stillborn son, Lloyd, Jr.
